​Building India’s Health Professions Education Community

​​AHPE: A Decade of Leadership in Health Professions Education (2015–2026)
From 2015 to 2026, the Academy of Health Professions Educators (AHPE) has emerged as India’s foremost professional body dedicated to strengthening health professions education (HPE). Over this decade, AHPE has built a vibrant national community of educators, advanced competency‑based reforms, expanded faculty development, and established a culture of academic excellence across institutions.

Through conferences, dialogues, workshops, collaborations, and structured governance, AHPE has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s HPE landscape.

 

Inception and Foundational Years (2015–2016)

AHPE began its journey by anchoring India’s largest annual gathering of educators—the National Conference on Health Professions Education (NCHPE). These early conferences focused on:

  • Quality assurance and accreditation

  • Professionalism and ethical practice

  • Building a unified community of educators across medical, dental, nursing, and allied health sciences

This period laid the foundation for AHPE’s identity as a national knowledge partner.

Strengthening Faculty Development (2017–2018)

AHPE expanded its academic footprint through NCHPEs and thematic sessions on:

  • Competency‑based curriculum

  • Assessment literacy

  • Professional identity formation

  • Educational leadership

  • Social accountability

These conferences positioned AHPE as a catalyst for CBME implementation across India.

Digital Expansion and National Reach (2019–2020)

AHPE embraced digital platforms to broaden access to faculty development. National webinars were conducted on:

  • Self‑directed learning

  • Early clinical exposure

  • Professionalism

  • Curricular governance

  • Technology and AI in CBME

  • Interprofessional collaboration

This period significantly expanded AHPE’s reach, enabling educators from all regions to participate.

Organisational Strengthening and Growth (2021–2023)

AHPE entered a phase of consolidation and modernisation. Key developments included:

  • Stabilisation of AHPE Dialogues as a monthly academic series

  • Streamlining of membership processes through digital workflows

  • Strengthening of governance, documentation, and collaboration guidelines

These reforms created a stable organisational backbone for future expansion.

Academic Expansion and National Capacity Building (2023–2026)
 

AHPE Dialogues

A structured, high‑quality academic series featuring national and international experts on assessment, professionalism, mental health, AI in HPE, curriculum governance, and interprofessional learning.

AHPE Workshops

A recurring workshop series conducted once every four months, aligned with AHPE Vision 2025–30. Workshops included:

  • Use of AI in HPE Research

  • Making Formative Assessment Work in Real Time

  • Case‑Based Discussion Using AI for Student Engagement

These workshops strengthened faculty competencies across classroom, clinical, community, and digital learning environments.

NCHPE Quality Culture

NCHPEs during this period saw major enhancements:

  • Standardised abstract formats

  • Strengthened scientific review processes

  • Integration of medical humanities and hidden curriculum

  • Alignment with CBME priorities

  • Dedicated faculty‑development tracks

NCHPEs became benchmark national events for educational scholarship.

Collaborations and National Partnerships (2024–2026)

AHPE collaborated with leading institutions and professional bodies to expand national capacity building:

  • Anatomical Society of India – MAHACON VI (2024)

  • SRIHER – ARQ Summit 2025

  • Indian Psychiatric Society – Mental Health First Aid Webinar

  • SDUAHER – IC‑HPE 2026

  • CMC Vellore – IMEC 2026

  • GMC Bhavnagar – Regional HPE Workshop (2026)

  • Bhaikaka University – National Conference on Medical Humanities (2026)

  • KAHER – National Certificate Course in Interprofessional Education (IPE)

These collaborations expanded AHPE’s academic influence and strengthened interdisciplinary learning.

Membership Diversity and Growth

AHPE’s membership grew steadily from 2015 to 2026, crossing 1050+ members. The membership represents:

  • Medical educators

  • Dental faculty

  • Nursing and midwifery educators

  • Physiotherapy and allied health sciences

  • AYUSH institutions

  • Public health and community medicine

  • Curriculum planners and MEU/NMC nodal faculty

This diversity enriched national conversations on HPE and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration.

Vision Plan: AHPE Vision 2025–30

AHPE articulated a long‑term strategic vision focusing on:

  • National faculty capacity building

  • Competency‑based and interprofessional education

  • Communities of practice

  • Educational scholarship

  • Responsible integration of AI

  • National and international collaborations

This vision provides a clear roadmap for AHPE’s future growth and leadership.

Leadership: EC, Trustees, and Advisory Board

AHPE’s progress over the decade has been guided by a committed leadership team comprising:

  • Executive Committee (EC) – responsible for academic planning, governance, and operational oversight

  • Trustees – custodians of AHPE’s mission, values, and long‑term stability

  • Advisory Board – senior national leaders providing strategic guidance, academic direction, and mentorship

Together, these teams have ensured continuity, quality, and strategic alignment across AHPE’s initiatives.
